began investigating Aug. 13 after homeowners called to say a drone hovering over their pool dropped a dye into it. The dye turned the pool water “an alarming shade of green.”Absecon police charged Spina shortly after the drone stuck again on Friday, dropping the dye into the pool at the Quality Inn in Galloway. Police took Spina into custody after seeing the drone land at his business on White Horse Pike.
An investigation revealed the colored material is sea dye, a lifesaving marker used during potential water rescues. It contains a fluorescent green dye that spreads over the surface of the water to assist a rescue pilot, according to Presto Dyechem, a Philadelphia company that manufactures the product. The dye typically is contained in small packet that can be placed in a life vest pocket, the company said.
Spina was charged with multiple counts of criminal mischief. A voice mail left by NJ Advance Media at a number listed for the business wasn’t immediately returned Tuesday. Anyone with information is asked to call Absecon police Detective Neal Galletta at 609-641-0667, ext. 216, or Galloway Detective Sgt. Jason Kiamos at 609-652-3705, ext. 331.
