HOUSE OF THE WEEK | The five-bedroom, five-bathroom house was built in 1973 and renovated to the studs this year

“If you were to walk in that space when we first bought the house, there were several reasons you would look around, [and] say: ‘This is a teardown. We can’t make this work. This isn’t enough space or this is a strange layout,’” said Jacey Cavanagh, Koenig’s partner in the redesign. “It was a true test of creativity. And we literally had to think outside of the four walls.”

“We really felt like we wanted to work with the footprint because of how it was situated on the street, how it blended into the neighborhood,” Cavanagh said. “With the split level, you end up being able to capture so much interior space, and there’s all these nooks and crannies and different levels.”

The foyer, with a vaulted ceiling, leads to a study and a dining room. Down four steps on this floor, the house has an open-concept living room and kitchen that connect to a deck and the screened porch. A powder room is tucked under the staircase. A combined mud room and pantry off the kitchen has a terracotta floor and connects to an herb garden.
