Much of the success of the German discount supermarkets lies of course in their lower prices. That’s why they now command between them a quarter of the Irish grocery market. But it’s not just price. Both companies no longer source most of their produce from Germany.
They do so a lot closer to home. Only this week Lidl signed a renewed and beefed-up deal with O’Briens Fine Food to supply cooked meat products such as ham and turkey.
