The opposition said the merger was 'too big to fail', but also flagged their own commitments should they form government after the 2026 state election.

Emergency warnings are in place for fires burning near Tenterfield and Tabulam, NSW; Stanthorpe, NSW; and south of Bundaberg, QLD.Flinders University would get its own research fund under a state opposition plan announced in response to the merger of the universities of Adelaide and South Australia.

One of those is a promise to set up a research fund for Flinders University, similar to the pool of money that will be available to the new institution, should the Liberals form office after the 2026 state election. The exact amount of the opposition's proposed fund for Flinders has not been announced, but it's likely to be in excess of $50 million – equivalent to what the government has offered to the new university.

The Liberals are also committing to provide more resources for regional South Australia, should the party take power in just under two and half years' time. "The Liberals have taken the time during the committee that the government set up for parliament to consider their position. They include giving the Renumeration Tribunal the power to set the salary of Adelaide University's vice-chancellor, mandating the publication of the university council's minutes and agendas, requiring the council to have a code of conduct, and prohibiting investments in defence and fossil fuels.

Modelling by the universities estimates that when it opens in January 2026, Adelaide University will have about 44,000 full-time students and about 7,000 full-time staff.
