The vote should mark the country's transition back to democracy after three years of military government, but the opposition says France, which has a military presence there, has an interest in maintaining the status quo.

Adoum fears that France and other Western partners will not push for a change in political rule in case it jeopardises their military presence in strategically-located Chad. The authorities blamed Dillo's Socialist Party Without Borders for an attack on the security agency following the death one of their leaders.
