Education Minister Norma Foley warns that social media companies could be fined millions of euros if they do not comply with rules regarding young people on their platforms. Tánaiste Micheál Martin also highlights the negative impact of social media on young people.

Social media companies could be facing fines of “millions of euros” if they do not comply with rules concerning young people on their platforms, says Education Minister Norma Foley.

Asked if she agreed with Mr Martin’s comments, Minister Foley told reporters at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis in Dublin that she has engaged with social media companies. “Equally so, that’s a matter for them. I am very, very pleased that Coimisiún na Meán is up and running and the regulation that they would have there, the considerable power and force that they will have in terms of regulation.
