Workers have been spotted in Old Market Square installing the St George's Day flag ahead of the patron saint's celebrations. The flag, being draped over Nottingham Council House on Tuesday, April 16, has previously been described as the largest in England.
The workers were spotted in the morning of the same day attaching cables in between the building's imposing pillars. The 60ft flag is being unfurled a week before St George's Day, celebrated on Tuesday, April 23. This is different from previous years, when the flag was put up the day before the big day. In 2022, a parades took place from Pelham Street to Old Market Square, as well as a raffle. This was the first St George's Day parade to take place after the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2023, the event organised by the Royal Society of St George in Radford was cancelled due to rising costs.
No celebratory events have been confirmed in the city centre for 2024. An event is scheduled at Sherwood Forest for April 27, between 11am and 4pm. The activities will see the Sherwood Outlaws demonstrating the combat techniques and tactics which could win - or lose - a bloody battle. At the free event, children will learn more about what it meant to be a knight of the realm and fight upon the battlefields of Medieval Europe.
