A blood test that could detect 12 cancers at an early stage is among the projects that will benefit from a series of medical tech investments, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has suggested.

Trevor Phillips now asks Peter Kyle about the upcoming budget, which Chancellor Rachel Reeves will deliver on 30 October. He asks why ministers are talking about investment in green industries and cancer research when warning of a £22bn in public finances.'We have money to spend,' Mr Kyle says.'I mean, government does have money to spend. It's how you actually invest. And this is the negotiations.

'We have to fix the damage left that was inherited by the previous government, that awful £22bn black hole. 'But we also need to get the economy growing. Now, if you look at my department, for example, you know, I've had to go through and reprioritise. 'We are investing in the technology of the future. But by doing so wisely, you can attract private sector investment as well.'He described it as a 'balancing act'.
