Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe has undertaken to investigate allegations of fraud and corruption around the Social Relief of Distress Grant.
Two Stellenbosch University students, Veer Gosai and Joel Cedras, conducted a study about the prevalence of fraud in the SRD grant They sampled 60 students and found that 56 were signed up for the grant without having applied for it themselves. The two were invited by Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development to explain their findings.She says, “There is no way we can delay what is urgent to poor people. We are taking upon ourselves to investigate, what this animal is, how far in space, how it eats of our fiscus that is shrinking daily.”
The Department of Social Development and the Social Security Agency of South Africa have 30 days to investigate allegations that system flaws make it easy to commit fraud and corruption to flourish at the agency.
