Taxi operators near the Lebombo Border Post in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, which separates South Africa and Mozambique, report that business has been very slow due to the political unrest in Mozambique.
There have been sporadic demonstrations in the country regarding the integrity of the recent general elections. Daniel Chapo and his party, FRELIMO, were declared victorious. One taxi operator, James Mkhabela, says people are afraid to cross the border, despite normal operations continuing there. “Our job is not running smooth as usual. The people are afraid to come this side because they think that if maybe they will come this side, when they go back, they’ll find that maybe the strike has started again. So, they don’t come this side. Since I have arrived here in the morning, I would have at least been able to fill my taxi within 30 minutes but now I have been here for more than five hours with no passengers. So, we are struggling a lot, I don’t want to lie. We are struggling.
