The market was only pipped to the post for the title of best 'medium-sized city' by Bath, but it scored higher for its ease of getting around, parking and lack of crowds

One of the most enchanting experiences as the year winds down is to wander through a Christmas market clutching a hot chocolate, mulled wine, roasted chestnuts or a sizzling German sausage. Wrapped up against the chill, this signals the 'true' arrival of the season of festivities, family and friendship.

Visitors can expect to find an array of items including scented candles, upcycled cutlery, and artisan liqueurs beneath a twinkling Christmas tree. For those keen on supporting independent traders, Chester's historic double-deck shopping arcades, known as the Rows and dating back to the 13th century, offer even more unique finds.

Once they've had their fill of market magic, guests can marvel at the splendour of Bath Abbey and the ancient Roman Baths, whizz around the ice at Royal Victoria Park, or stroll by the iconic Royal Crescent. Free to all, the market springs to life from November 28 through December 15. Wells: This event takes place for one day in mid-December. However, there's no shortage of sights and activities in this charming medieval city. The gothic cathedral is an impressive sight, expansive and surrounded by open green spaces. On Saturday 14 December, over 100 Christmas market stalls will be erected in the grounds of Bishops Palace Green and Wells Market Place. The city centre is ideal for a relaxed walk, boasting a variety of unique shops and dining options.
