As a COVID-19 vaccine for 2021 looks more promising, insiders say immunity passports are back on the menu

While officials have emphasized the need for caution, the prospect of a COVID-19 vaccine rollout for 2021 has raised a new set of questions: Who will get it first, have held talks with governments and businesses

The original premise of health passports was to link an individual's digital ID to their COVID-19 test results. The implication was that if, say, someone had tested negative for the virus in the last 24 hours, they should be allowed into their office, or be allowed to take a plane trip, for example. , questions around the length of COVID-19 immunity and risks of reinfection saw the idea abandoned in favor of contact tracing systems.

"The development of vaccinations has changed the approach of many of our existing and prospective partners," he said. "With a vaccine, we have an opportunity to significantly reduce the risk that coronavirus poses to many individuals and we'll be able to move from a reactive way of managing the virus to a proactive approach."

He said passports could potentially incorporate three different types of status: those who have been vaccinated, those who have very recently been tested for the virus, and those who have very recently been tested for antibodies.
