Her stand was distinct from the question of whether Australia should throw off the monarchy and introduce an elected head of state. Ms Thorpe said she supports an Australian republic – but she doesn’t want it to happen yet, not before a treaty is created between the country’s Indigenous people and the Government., unlike countries such as Canada and New Zealand, where no treaty has ever existed.

Ms Thorpe’s comments come as the country embarks on a significant cultural and national debate about its constitution and its future. The Voice to Parliament proposal would establish an advisory body of Indigenous people who would give the Government expertise and feedback on policies affecting their communities.
