“If not for aquaculture we would be a community of 150 people waiting to die,” Hermitage's mayor said during a panel discussion at the World Aquaculture Society conference in St. John’s last week. From BarbDeanSimmons SaltWire

Hermitage Mayor Steve Crewe - Barb Dean-SimmonsSteve Crewe doesn’t need anyone to twist his arm to talk about the benefits of aquaculture.

Crewe admits he was skeptical 20 years ago when he started hearing about aquaculture and the potential economic boost it might bring to the area. Crewe was working as an economic development officer in the area at the time, helping community leaders brainstorm on ways to bring new dollars in.Two decades later Crewe says with conviction, “Cooke Aquaculture has been our saving grace.”

He said the aquaculture industry created a future for this remote region that has a population hovering around 600.
