Cotton is Texas’ largest crop, and industry experts say they expect just half the normal annual yield — which will drive up costs for consumers, the TexasTribune reports.

Justin Rex for The Texas Tribune / ContributorA bad year for cotton spells disaster for the state, which leads the nation in cotton production. As the state’s largest agricultural export, cotton is responsible for thousands of jobs in other sectors, such as ginning companies, warehouses and oil mill processing plants.

“The biggest earner in the South Plains is the agriculture industry, so it’s a serious deal when your whole economy feels that,” Heffington said. What Heffington has on his farm now isn’t promising. It’s one of his worst crops in the 35 years he’s been farming. The cotton that did manage to grow has a bloom at the top the size of a small acorn — half of its typical size. Once crop insurance adjusts the value of the fields next month, that cotton likely will be considered a loss.

Heffington said that crop insurance is a lot like home insurance, in that customers aren’t 100 percent covered.

TexasTribune Nah, climate isn’t a problem. Better we spend that money busing migrants the farmers need to N.Y.

This money could have helped Hey...let's make sure when the Traitors start blaming the Democrats for this we point out that it's the climate change they've kept willfully ignoring while obstructing every attempt to deal with it that's responsible. If you Texans to see that your state is turning into a desert, that's on you. Lived in Bryan to Houston for 30+ yrs. During that time, the rains have become spotty at best, and when it does, they are insane downpours. You are experiencing the birth of a desert.
