Ellen Pao, who highlighted tech's gender problems, says they continue to be 'embarassing'

Ellen Pao, the former Kleiner Perkins partner whose lawsuit against the firm 10 years ago highlighted tech's gender-centered issues, says not enough has changed since then.In her lawsuit filed in 2012, Pao claimed that Kleiner denied her promotions and compensation because of her gender and fired her in retaliation for her litigation.

Pao also says, hoever, that those conversations haven't brought enough change, pointing to male entrepreneurs who can raise large funding rounds after failing spectacularly, like WeWork founder Adam Neumann. After burning through billions of investor dollars and becoming a poster boy for venture and startup excesses, Neumann's new residential real estate venture has been backed by Andreessen Horowitz, among others.

"It’s embarrassing. It makes no sense," Pao told Fortune."But it’s happening, because the people who have the checkbooks and have the big investment funds don’t really seem to care that much. And because of that, we aren’t seeing meaningful change, and we just keep making the same mistakes." Despite this, Pao insists that she isn't looking to"cancel" anybody from the industry because of problems they had in their past.

"I don’t think anybody’s looking to cancel people and keep them out forever — but we want to know that they’ve actually changed, that they’re not causing more harm, and also that they’ve addressed the harm that they’ve actually caused in the past," she told Fortune."There's a much deeper awareness of systemic problems," she said.
