A Toronto-based tech company says it recreated ArriveCan within less than 48-hours to show that the federal government overpaid millions for the app.

as the government lifted the mask mandate and health check requirements for travellers.

On Friday night, some of Jaitly’s colleagues launched a voluntary hackathon with the goal of cloning the app and showing the public how fast and cheap it would be to build.ArriveCan’s cumulative cost has been contested. While a CBSA report said the organization had spent a total of $29.5-million on the app,However, the government said the figure is “misleading” since it represents more than just money spent on ArriveCan.

Anthony Housefather, Member of Parliament for Mount- Royal, told CTV News Toronto that the $54 million figure also encompasses costs such as contact tracing for officers and primary inspection kiosks. “Not all apps are the same,” Housefather said. “ArriveCan is not a simple information sharing app. It is a secure transactional tool that used Artificial Intelligence to verify proof of vaccination.”

Jaitly acknowledged it takes less time to clone an app than it does to build it from scratch, but still, he said it goes to show the amount of effort, time and money it could have taken.

Yes they overpaid, we get it... But they also had to pay to test security, servers, they had to setup a PC side application that interacts with the passport database. There is so much more than just an app. But I will not agree that this app was worth the money.

Stop listening to the government when they say they need more money. They don't. They need to learn how to manage the vast amounts of money they already steal from us.

Governments only think they know what they are doing when it comes to spending our money. If they worked like this in the private sector, all of them would have been fired for incompetence.

It's always easier to recreate...than to innovate.

Guess what liberal voters don’t care they’d spend that again to further discriminate against their own people especially those they disagree with

This story is dumb, they didn't recreate the app, they created a form that mimics the customer facing part of the app. It's like comparing a building to a model

Trudeau bankrolling his buddies

What liberal friend got the contract to rip off Canada for the arrive can app!

Lift the veil and see who is behind that company govt paid millions to for something so much less.

Good for them. IstandwithTrudeau maskssavelives CovidIsntOver

Overpaid or intentional money laundering

That could be said for most transactions done with the government. Our local city council spent $700k on a 10 x 20 building

$54 million for that app? That must be a joke, I strongly believe there is CORRUPTION and that the money ended up in some pocket(s).

Sure, you could secretly analyze it before and then come out as if it was your first try. It’s open.

Most likely they could recreate the App but can they insure the security and data protection ? Kids can now make Apps but there are different level when there several other requirements. If they can mimic the exact level of details then we can talk

The government always overspends on tech. Sometimes it doesn’t even work. Decision makers are not tech savvy so they get hosed.

So who exactly did the government pay & where did all that money go ?

Remember when everyone got their shorts in a knot over a cabinet minister expensing $16 for orange juice? She resigned. I think $54 million is a little more serious. Who is responsible for this and why do they still have a job? canpoli

It's called money laundering

Well they had to pay for all the fake reviews, so...

Was their a legit tendering process or was it like We Charity?

Who created the apps right my young son can do himself

Why they pay

Time for a 54 million dollar refund to save the planet please

Because they had a panel of 30 people(Trudeau appointments) at $1 million dollars each to control the spending

everyone knows they overpaid the question is who's relative did they give the money to?

Shocking.....

I am sure a thorough investigation will reveal that funds didn't goto a liberal friendly company.

The government overpays for most things + it’s easier to recreate than create.

Two Canadian tech companies say each recreated ArriveCan app to show Ottawa’s $54-million price tag was too highLazer Technologies and TribalScale have announced that hackathons held over the Thanksgiving long weekend successfully reproduced clones of the app Of course. That’s how the politicians make money 😂 Also it was illegal bc pfizer has admitted the vaccine was never tested for transmission efficacy!! So there were no grounds to begin with! Of course it was too high! Government is terrible at spending money. They overpay for everything and waste our tax money. Then they increase taxes. Enough is enough!

Lure? Just fire them if they stay home..they'll be back in no time. firestevesimmons OK, but if that doesn’t work, fire enough of them and they’ll be back…or others to replace them. Would be nice if that could also be done to the privileged public sector. How many of them are still refusing to go in to work, negatively affecting services to the public?
