This SA gold mine spent R150 million on a solar power plant – which will pay for itself in 5 years.

Pan African Resources' Evander mine in Mpumalanga is the latest in South Africa to draw power from solar panels.It cost around R150 million to build and is expected to pay for itself within five years.A gold mine in Mpumalanga is now drawing power from more than 26,000 solar panels and is claimed to be the first embedded project higher than 1 MW to receive full grid code compliance from Eskom.

JSE-listed gold producer Pan African Resources recently enlisted JUWI Renewable Energies to build a solar photovoltaic plant at its Evander operations in Mpumalanga. The 10 MW Elikhulu solar renewable energy plant satisfies around 30% of the mine's power demands and, according to JUWI, has become the first embedded project above 1 MW to receive full grid code compliance from Eskom.
