Thomas Hartle became one of the first Canadians to receive a federal exemption to treat symptoms of his stage-four colon cancer with magic mushrooms -- and he was celebrated for it. But not long after the landmark decision, Hartle says that legal avenues to access the drug have been 'shut off.'

Thomas Hartle became one of the first Canadians to receive a federal exemption to treat symptoms of his stage-four colon cancer with magic mushrooms just a few years ago -- and he was celebrated for it.

Listed under Schedule III of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the drug can only be obtained legally via an exemption from the federal minister, as part of a clinical trial or through a special access program that allows physicians to request it for patients suffering from serious or life-threatening conditions.

Hartle said the psilocybin made him more comfortable with his end-of-life anxiety, but his exemption expired after a year, and he is still waiting on an answer about getting another one. Though Health Canada said dozens of ministerial exemptions were granted last year, more than a hundred requests are still outstanding, including Hartle's.

Hawkswell said that has created challenges because doctors are unwilling to apply or participate without first being trained. And outside of a clinical trial, experience treating patients with psilocybin was previously only available through an exemption.

YAY.... More tax

The Liberals want to control: our healthcare, our wages, our vehicles, our food, our pay cheque, our guns, our religion, our education, our free speech, our homes, what we eat, our air travel and even our straws. The only thing the Liberals don’t want to control is inflation

I’m on the fence about this. Mushrooms in small doses is great but if you aren’t mature about it and eat too much it can be pretty dangerous.

Want to take a stab at why mental health in this country is in such a bad state?

If it helps, it helps. It's a natural substance. Git er done.

-Weed is ok -Mushroom is ok -Alcohol is ok -Adult massage is ok -Night clubs “and all consequences after getting drunk “ is ok -electronic cigg is ok But 😎.. WARNING ⛔️ Plastic is a 👹 sin 👿 .. we will prohibit straws🤓

Growing mushrooms is as easy as taking a crap

Micro dosing shrooms helps depression. End of story!

They're not addictive and treat depression. Safer than weed. Should've legalized this instead

govcanhealth should certify some home growing kits, also. Growing these isn't complicated.

why not make our kids crazy with hallucinations?

As the market grows? That market has been around since before I was born. It's foolish to claim otherwise.

As under-the-table market grows, patients urge Ottawa to regulate magic mushroomsThe psychoactive compound produced by the mushrooms – called psilocybin – is not legal in Canada but there are early clinical trials underway It's psilocin/psilocybin/magic mushrooms—not carfentanil. The government should fuck off and mind their own business (which they mostly are at this point, to be fair). A legal prodrug to psilocin like 4-AcO-DMT can be a better option as it permits more accurate dosing. Please don't. Nobody in government knows how to handle psychedelics, looks how they mangled the legal cannabis rollout..keep it grey zoned
