Celestica joins Intel, Synopsys and others in cutting Silicon Valley staff.

Celestica Inc., which provides contract manufacturing and design consulting services, is laying off 44 workers in Silicon Valley.

The cuts will be spread across the company's facilities in Fremont and San Jose, Mansi Shukla, a human resources manager with Celestica, told state employment officials earlier this month. The Toronto-based company notified workers Jan. 16 that it intends to begin laying off employees March 20, Shukla said in a pair of letters made public Tuesday.

While Celestica doesn't plan to close any of its facilities as part of the layoffs, the job cuts will be permanent, she said.As part of its workforce reductions, Celestica is letting go:13 who work at 49235 Milmont Dr. in FremontAmong those the company is laying off are 16 machinists, six machine operators and four production operators, according to the numbers Shukla sent to the state Employment Development Department.

News of the layoffs comes less than a week after Celestica reported its fourth-quarter results. In the period, the company earned $42.4 million, or 35 cents a share, on $2 billion in sales. In the same period a year earlier, the company posted a profit of $31.9 million, or 26 cents a share on sales of $1.5 billion.

Celestica is only the latest company to cut staff in Silicon Valley. Last week, chip design company Synopsys Inc.
