There's plenty of chatter about who bought a small office building in Jackson Square for a record price. Maybe a famed Apple designer? Here's what we know.

A roughly 10,000-square-foot office building in San Francisco's Jackson Square neighborhood was acquired for $38 million by an unidentified buyer said to be linked to Apple Inc.'s former chief designerThe sale of 807 Montgomery St. closed on Jan. 24 at an eye-catching price: The buyer shelled out about $3,800 per square foot for the near-century-old property. The price works out to $5,500 per square foot when only the 6,930 square feet above grade is counted.

Apart from the record price, the sale is intriguing for another reason: The brick building is immediately adjacent to two properties already owned by Ive at 809 and 831 Montgomery streets, as well as a third nearby property at 100 Columbus Ave. owned by Ive and used as a parking lot. It has not been confirmed that Ive — who did not return an email seeking comment Tuesday — is the mystery buyer, although multiple sources have said that the British product designer and friend of the late Apple founderOne source with direct knowledge of the transaction told me that the buyer is an"ultra-high wealth individual" whom Ive knows"very well."

The buyer is listed as 807 Montgomery Street LLC — a limited liability company registered to San Francisco law firm Sideman & Bancroft LLP. An attorney with the firm said that it isA source familiar with the deal said the buyer was represented by
