Some beneficiaries of Lisbon Estate, once one of the biggest citrus and mango exporters in Africa, have claimed that 1 500 hectares of their land were sold for R7.5 million without their knowledge or consent

The piece of land in question – near the boundary of the Kruger National Park on the banks of the Sabie River – is, according to the beneficiaries’ lawyer, Richard Spoor, conservatively valued at R120 million.

The land belongs to the Nhlangwini Trust and the ownership of it was transferred in 2004 to 500 beneficiaries, following a successful land claim. It was then leased to Gazankulu Fruit Farm, operating as Lisbon Estate.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism. Thereafter you will be billed R75 per month.
