Builders call on the Queensland government to delay new housing regulations to ease widespread construction delays and labour shortages.

The new laws detail minimum accessibility and energy-efficiency standards for building new homes.

The energy efficiency changes mean that new buildings will need to meet a minimum star rating of seven, instead of six, out of 10. John Mayo is the chief adviser to the government for Spinal Life Australia and said changes to house designs did not require builders to use any new products or techniques."The changes only meet the requirements of those who have trouble walking," Mr Mayo said."Young families have ageing parents and their houses need to be accessible so parents can visit," Mr Mayo said.

Nic_McElroy _SarahCumming Labour shortages in housing industry? Tradies are very busy for their rich Asian clients. Whole suburbs are demolished for them to build luxury homes. This way you'll never get affordable housing for the true blue Aussies. The government asked for it

It makes sense to wait until the backlog is gone. Some of the flood victims have been without a home for nearly 12 months. The last thing their thinking about is new energy efficient building codes they just want a roof over their head.

It’s never the right time to do things properly in the building industry is it
