News that Anglo American Platinum CEO Natascha Viljoen will step down from the top job to join the Newmont Corporation in the US came as a surprise to the market. But most everyone can agree it is an offer few mining executives could refuse.

Viljoen, who has served as Amplats CEO since April 2020, announced her resignation on Wednesday even though she will continue to serve as CEO of the platinum mining company for the next year to carry out her notice period.
