The city should not spend our hard-earned tax dollars bailing out downtown real estate speculators, our columnist writes.

Feb 16, 2023

A key part of Mayor London Breed’s response to this crisis is the plan she proposed in her State of the City address, “A Roadmap For Downtown.” The sentiment is well-meaning, but the approach is backward. Imagine a new Calle 24 Heritage Pavilion on the Mission’s historic 24th Street celebrating San Francisco’s own unique Latino culture, the music, the murals, the festivals, and bringing visitors to the many small shops and restaurants there.

That’s why neighborhood leaders, small business owners and community advocates are organizing to build back San Francisco from the bottom up — not the top down. Without raising any taxes, we have a plan to re-invest in neighborhood places, affordable housing, legacy businesses and the neighborhood-based experiences that will keep our economy strong by keeping our city a special place to work, visit and live.
