Some lovely memories of a business some of you may remember in the town

A member of a well-known Watford family has shared her memories of the business that once occupied the premises of a former café popular with Watford fans.

Leonard’s two sisters – Rose and Yvetta, who was known as Ett – helped run the Vicarage Road shop which had a distinctive feature. “She accused my father of sacking her, she didn’t speak to him for ages and she told everybody ‘what do you think? He’s sacked me after all these years!” “He had a very dry sense of humour. He could wind people up beautifully without them knowing and then sit back and watch.

“The shoppers would go regularly to the one butcher and the one greengrocer. Children would come to our stall because they knew my mother kept a supply of sweets that she used to give them. It’s little things like that that were so different in those days.” “The sad thing is that there’s no family left,” Carol said. “We never had children which is one of the reasons why we didn’t take on the business. My father said ‘no, let it go with me’. Obviously the supermarkets had started then and that was the main reason we didn’t take it over.”
