Opinion: Building a better future shouldn\u0027t come at the expense of bulldozing local businesses.

Considering these disruptions, it is no surprise that 70 per cent of small businesses would like to see their local government adopt a construction mitigation policy that includes compensation for businesses. The city of Montreal recently expanded its compensation program by offering a $5,000 lump-sum grant to businesses affected by major construction work.

The once-vibrant street has morphed into a nightmarish construction zone, dramatically interrupting customer flow and business operations. “This used to be one of the busiest streets in Vancouver, with a constant flow of foot traffic,” said Wright. “Nowadays, nobody walks along the street anymore, and there is excessive traffic with no options for parking. We’re bleeding money.”Article content

When asked how the city can ease these burdens, Wright responded with a wry laugh. “Frankly, considering the magnitude of this project, there is little that can be done to alleviate the financial impact on small businesses other than providing us with adequate funding to stay open.”
