Owner of Epic Electric Scooters says updates will make it more difficult for underaged or impaired people to ride

Tafadzwa Mpaso, founder of Epic Electric Scooters, said the company has received several safety complaints from local authorities. He is hoping new updates will help keep riders safe. - Vivian Ulinwa/SaltWire

Tafadzwa Mpaso, founder of Epic Electric Scooters, said the company has received complaints from local authorities concerning riders under the age of 16 using the e-scooters. To confirm the age of riders, the new updates will require riders to scan their ID on the Epic Electric Scooters app while also using facial recognition.

“We had reports of underaged kids riding scooters. So, we took some measures of blocking some of the credit cards that are mainly used that did not require you to have an ID, like prepaid cards. So, that was just a temporary feature until we released the ID verification.” “We chose people to match shapes. So, we then calculate to see how your reaction was, matching the shapes. If you don't pass the test, that means your reaction is not enough to be able to ride the scooters."
