Autoworkers at Ford in Canada could go on strike as soon as Tuesday if a deal isn’t reached by the 11:59 p.m. deadline on Sept. 18“We’ve made progress at the sub tables and at our local tables, so that is very encouraging,” Unifor president Lana Payne said. “But we’re not there yet. We’ve got a lot of work to do this weekend and Ford’s got to realize that we’re serious here.”

Payne said negotiations between Unifor and Ford are “nowhere near” where they need to be as both sides head into the weekend, adding that the union has rejected two proposals from Ford since bargaining began because they did not adequately meet demands for improved wages and pensions. The union is also seeking better job security amid the electric-vehicle transition.
