High-Performance Manager for the South African Men’s Sevens rugby team, Marius Schoeman, believes the invaluable experience gained by many youngsters this season will come in handy at the Paris Olympic Games. They will kick off their campaign on Wednesday with two Pool A fixtures against Ireland and New Zealand, two days before the opening ceremony of the Games.
“Limited opportunities for our youngsters to gain experience and a lot of them had to gain it on the circuit but with a couple of youngsters having played six or seven tournaments now, you can really see they are much more mature on the field and the guys are finding each other on the field and I am really excited going into these Olympics.”
“We had a tough 18 months and we had the last spot in Monaco, lots of injuries and downs and very happy and massive bonus for us to qualify and get a chance to grab a chance and get one of the medals.”
