The Department received a petition on behalf of residents of Cresslawn, in Ekurhuleni – east of Johannesburg, alleging that there is a shebeen operating next to a primary school in the area.
According to the Gauteng Liquor Act, shebeens or bottle stores should not be situated within a 500-metre radius of a place of worship or an educational institution. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says, “We are moving to more shebeens because the process to shut one, is too long. That is why we are concentrating on all those that are found near our schools. Those that are close to our schools, which were there already, we will persuade them to relocate to other areas. But those that came when we had already built the schools, we have no choice but to shut them down.
Long time ago, south african we knw the law. No allowed to open a tarven or shebeen next to school or church.
Why attacking breadwinners in these times of need? In this economy? During festive season nogal.
Those taverns should sue them they have no authority to shut down the businesses by law
Just because it is December boss. Never allow anyone to buy say 5cases without a liquor lisence.
The idea and effort is great but I wonder this is right approach and applicable law is implemented because for a license to be cancelled there must be a transgression. This means DE endeavors might be in conflict with rights which comes with the trade's license
Is that a field of their responsibility. Or should they lodge a complain with the relevant authorities?
