An official of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) assured consumers that there will no further price increase in basic and prime commodities until February.

“The consumers can expect na walang movement muna from now until siguro matapos yung January or hanggang February. Para hindi rin sumabay sa mga increases ng fuel, kuryente. So para makapahinga sila at least dun sa mga pagkain, food products ,” DTI Undersecretary Ruth Castelo in an interview over GMA-7’s 24 Oras Tuesday night.

The assurance came after manufacturers of milk products, laundry detergent, canned meat and condiments requested a 50-centavo to P2-increase in the price of these products. She did explain though that they were some of the requests which they found to be justified. “Raw materials rin talaga e. Kasi imported yung gamit nila, especially for the soap, but yung canned meat imported rin. Hindi na rin nila daw mapigilan yung pagtaas. Merong mga justified requests, merong hindi justified ang request, so pinagaaralan nating mabuti ,” the DTI official said.

But, at least, for the time being, Castelo said consumers can still heave a sigh of relief that prices will stay as they are until February.
