in 1976 for the strong compositional similarities between his “My Sweet Lord” and their “He’s So Fine”), the “Blurred Lines” case raised the stakes by suggesting that the far more abstract qualities of rhythm, tempo, and even the general feel of a song are also eligible for protection — and thus that a song can be sued forlike an earlier one.
“We all feel like the system has failed us.” — Lucas Keller, founder of music management company Milk and Honey Artists are understandably reluctant to publicly disclose that they have copyright insurance, which could open them up to an increase in lawsuits. But music attorney Bob Celestin, who’s helped represent acts like Pusha T and Missy Elliott, says it is safe to assume that the majority of artists who show up in Top 10 chart positions are covered in this way. Big labels, too, usually have comprehensive insurance policies that protect them against copyright issues. Yet these policies have gaps.
Good
Let the samplers live
It’s also okay to call up the artist you’ve accidentally ‘lifted’ from and say “we wanna give you a songwriting credit” like The Stones did with KD Lang. Everyone wins.
Music streaming plataforms based in BLOCKCHAIN will resolve this problem.
DjPhonse Let’s be real here, the money they’re paying in the settlements of those lawsuits are fractions of what was made on the touring and sales from those songs so.
It is stupid to want to pass modern conceptions of copyright to the music industry. The music lives on the music that preceded it. Bob Dylan comes out on all rock songs!
LOL, so, it's not the boards of the record labels being filled with NO talent bean counting HACKS, it's the 'lawsuits'...LOL
I’m 90% sure there isn’t a fair copyright law (to both the public and content creators) on the books anywhere in the world rn
This article is ridiculous! The best copyright insurance is originality! Which is a requisite for copyright protection. To observe that publishers with older catalogues are most likely to assert a claim of infringement is not academic. BTW Blurred Lines DID rip off Marvin Gaye!
Given the general lack of quality of modern day 'hits' this may not be a bad thing.
If you make the same beat a different way you should be protected. If someone coded a Facebook replica from the ground up using their own code then it's not infringement. The same should be true for music artists
There used to be a time when record companies, music publishers, song-pluggers, managers & songwriters were there to tell other songwriters when they crossed the “sounds too much like.....” line. Those days and those people are long gone. It’s now a very different music industry.
More like songbiters
Solution: Hey all you 'song writers' and 'composers', stop re-hashing old music, and wrote something, NEW, and ORIGINAL. Is it really that hard?! Sorry official_flo, gotta bring Right Round into this discussion, there's a lot more but this song comes to mind.
Perhaps we have finally seen the end of the 1-4-5-6 song structure? And we can have good music again? Even pop? that would be wonderful.
Maybe people should write something new
Sensible ... they couldn’t steal. It’s wrong.
Yep.
