In the December quarter, U.S. retail sales declined for the 12th straight quarter. Sales also declined in Europe, Harley’s second-biggest market. In a reflection of the demographic headwind, the heavyweight motorcycle maker’s stock price has declined by 44 per cent in the past five years. In comparison, the S&P 500 has gained 63 per cent.
Those efforts seem to be bearing fruit. Sales in Asia-Pacific rose 6.2 per cent from a year ago in the latest quarter and were up 2.7 per cent in 2019.
