Residents across Brazil’s mining state of Minas Gerais have lost faith in industry or government to protect them since a mining-waste dam collapsed last year, killing 270 people

CONGONHAS, Brazil—Marta Maia says she hasn’t slept properly for a year. From her bedroom window, the 60-year-old can see the vast mine-waste dam that looms over this town in southeast Brazil, just half a mile from her house.

It is one of 816 mining dams across the country causing alarm since a similar structure in the nearby town of Brumadinho collapsed a year ago, killing 270 people.
