Building a business is a lot like building a home: The more you commit and build what you dream, the more enjoyment you will derive.
Makenna’s father, a native Oregonian, co-founded Hazen Construction in partnership with his son-in-law, Jon, before retiring. With Jon’s construction background, Makenna’s design savvy and family legacy, the business was rebranded as Shelton Builders. It was the perfect foundation for a new kind of family business run on talent, tenacity and technology.
Business and finance tools can be as personal as a home and have just as significant implications from a money standpoint. The Sheltons useto run their business, as well as various other QuickBooks products including QuickBooks Capital, QuickBooks Payroll and QuickBooks Live Bookkeeping. The ability to choose the products and features that suit them is not unlike the personalized approach Jon and Makenna take when they build a custom home.
From social media to apps, business tools and more, the Sheltons are leaning in to this brave new world. “One of my favorite features about QuickBooks Online is that it is mobile, that we can use it in the field, we can use it at home, we can log in anywhere and whenever we need to. It also integrates with other apps that we use,” Jon explained.
“It has allowed us to do something a larger company can do, have a really healthy outlook on our accounting, and still be able to do it with just my wife and I,” Jon said. “That’s something that I don’t think was ever really as attainable as it is right now because of automation.” “We have a lot of vendors,” Jon said. “We’ve been able to find capital and to keep jobs going, to keep them moving.”
All of this helps elevate Shelton Builders’ mission: to build something great that will outlive them both.
