Australian wine companies and grape growers have called for a $103 million federal government investment to lift exports, increase wine-tourism and protect the economic prospects of an industry hit by drought and bushfires.
“I met with a bunch of European negotiators ... they said we should give up the right to use Prosecco … And we said we did not think that was a very good idea, in slightly different words,” he told“It [Prosecco] has gone from nothing to a $60 million industry in just a couple of years. In the United Kingdom it is now the most popular sparkling wine,” he said.
Last week the Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Association said the region had suffered a $42 million loss in tourism revenue over the past three months due to fires. It said the famous NSW wine region faced the “triple threats” of bushfire, drought and smoke taint.
