Facing challenges in the retail industry and unable to refinance its debt, supermarket chain Earth Fare Inc. has begun closing its roughly 50 stores, becoming at least the third U.S. grocer in recent weeks to seek a buyer or shut down.
The Asheville, N.C.-based natural and organic goods merchant, which has been backed by private equity firm Oak Hill Capital, said it is trying to sell its assets. But meanwhile it has alerted employees that it is closing its stores and is holding going-out-of-business sales.
Earthfare was a wonderful idea that provided a healthier choice, but where doomed from the start because bigger companies like Walmart and Publix kill competition. There biggest problem was that they charge too much money for food.
Supermarkets are a low margin business. Not all that surprising.

Love EarthFare so much... so sad they are closing. I shop Earthfare for my family daily... they have the highest standards for ingredients, sourcing and variety!! The staff are tenured, friendly and knowledgeable. It is the very best supermarket! 😩 Please don’t close!!
Maybe Better Health Market could replace Earth fate. It’s identical in store format but a bit cheaper...
The Earth Fare in Columbus, Ohio closed a couple of years ago.

The Walgreens/CVS duopoly is likely to continue because they now own the PBMs - pharmacy benefits managers - which control which pharmacies you can use on your health plan.
ad Sorry to hear this...if you are an EarthFare associate please consider applying for work at InglesAdvantage If you are a customer... be sure and stop by our stores and check out our amazing selection of products.
They should try lowering their prices before closing.
Consolidation continues. How many retail pharmacies are left? Walgreens/CVS dominates despite their atrocious service nationwide.
