“The coronavirus is a major public health situation in China. Our top priority is the health and safety of our employees and customers. We have implemented various preventative measures across our restaurants and other workplaces to help protect our employees and customers,” CEO Joey Wat said in a news release. Yum China, which includes more than 9,000 restaurants, is not estimating when it will reopen these restaurants, or if it will go a step further and close additional stores. That’s because nobody really knows whether or not this outbreak will be contained. As such, during Yum Brands’ Q4 earnings call Thursday morning, recently appointed CEO David Gibbs acknowledged the company is prioritizing the situation, as well as monitoring any potential impact outside of China.

McDonald’s has also put into place an “epidemic prevention and control task force” in tandem with local authorities. That includes providing meals to health care workers and medical screenings for customers who come into some of the brand’s restaurants, Kempczinski said during the call. In addition to ensuring its employees and customers are “safe and taken care of,” Kempczinski calls China a critical strategic market for McDonald’s.
