Danone is betting on sustainable dairy to bring back millennials and Gen Zers flocking to milk alternatives. Here's an inside look at their ambitious plan.

Danone North America is rolling out a major sustainability plan for its Horizon Organic milk brand, positioning it back in the lead for eco-conscious consumers in a time when the American dairy industry is struggling — and months after the nation's largest milk producerWithin five years, its Horizon Organic line is going to be the first dairy brand to be what it calls "carbon positive," meaning it will extract more carbon dioxide from the environment than it produces.

"More and more Americans — but we could say that younger consumers in particular, millennials and Gen Z — really love the clarity of where food comes from, where the ingredients come from," he said.Organizations have been using the term "carbon neutral" for 20 years, but when it comes to business, much of what that entails has largely been up to a company itself.

Lozano said that the specific idea of taking Horizon Organic past carbon neutrality started to take shape last year, when it held a forum with around 150 farmers it was partnered with. Danone North America will invest $15 million in farmer training across its 600 partner family farms, including regenerative agriculture practices that yield healthier soil that can sequester more carbon. Cows will receive diet adjustments to reduce methane emissions in their waste, and farms will be modified to prioritize renewable energy. Thirteen of Horizon's own manufacturing plants will use 100% renewable energy and 100% of the brand's packaging will be renewable or compostable.
