Matternet has unveiled a 10-foot kiosk designed to safely integrate its medical delivery drones into urban environments—and to slash the number of workers it needs and achieve a cost breakthrough

a lab specimen delivery route since last March on the campus of WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, N.C.

Right now, Raptopoulos says the advantage Matternet and UPS are offering is speed rather than price. The service is offered via an annual subscription. For the typical customer, who uses it for an average of 10 deliveries a day, the cost works out to be roughly the same as what they’d spend on express ground couriers to perform the same job, Raptopoulos says. Switching over to the docking station system should allow a reduction in costs of 66% to 75%, he says.
