Many couples who've been planning their wedding for a year are seeing all of it wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic. And they're not the only ones affected: The $54 billion industry is cratering, and taking a lot of incomes with it.

Most of their families would need to fly, and many members are elderly. Gross says they've already had 20 cancellations."To be safe, we know we have a lot of people traveling — they have to get on the plane. And, you know, our elderly relatives too. So it's really about safety."

Meanwhile, Jessica Elizarraras and TJ Skrodzki are videoconferencing with their wedding planner, Jordan Maney, about next steps after they postponed their wedding.Elizarraras answers,"I mean, it's hard because we don't know how long this is going to last. So we can say May, and if by April if it doesn't look any better, we're still in the same s***** boat."

Cellist Christina Trongone is warming up for practice at her home in San Antonio. She's one of many depending in part on weddings for their livelihoods — she books musicians and performs at about 200 weddings a year. If this persists, it will hurt.

There are lots of people doing small virtual weddings where people attend via video. One can still attend and witness the ceremony. Best friends could also make speeches. Not a bad solution for the times.

TheJoyWriterx2 Oh no 🙄 They spent 1/34th the time planning than most people do to buy a home. People are dying and have no roof over their heads but “MuH WeDDinG!”

Enjoy the intimacy of a small wedding. Save your money to live through these harsh months. Throw a massive party on your 1st anniversary, and celebrate how you made it through together. This pandemic should be reminding us about the important things in life...not the frivolous

Also, many people who were planning on being alive throughout 2020 will be changing their plans. It hurts when people lose work, yes, but geezus this is a much bigger deal than that.

Lots of dreams are lost. Have a faith joy will return. Let us pray we're together for Big Hope.

The financial impact on the wedding industry and all who work in it is enormous. But, to say that for the couples planning their wedding it's 'all wiped out' is hyperbole. A delayed wedding is not the end of the world.

I used to work in this industry - when I left, I told everyone I know, unless you are like “family-money” rich - save the $$$ & make down payment on a house or take a great trip together or start that business or whatever -a party costing tens of 1,000s is a big waste.

I’m an owner of a small company called “ Booze Travelers”. We are licensed insured bartenders for hire. This has killed my business my income

An industry every bit as pointless as cruise ships. Nothing of value is being lost.

As a person who both works in the industry and planned to get married this year, I can say this in undoubtedly true. I've had several cancellations and seems I'll have to replan my own wedding. It really sucks

Not 2be insensitive but this industry never made sense 2me. So much $ for young couples 2waste on an event rather than beginning their lives 2gether. You can have a ceremony 4almost no $.Wouldn't it be a better idea 2use the $ 2buy a house, pay off debt or some other investment?🤔

Sad, but a wedding does not a marriage make...

As far as the couples, they will save a bundle. Use it towards a house or to pay off student loans. Sorry about the caterers and venues, though.

When will they give up on the Neoliberal Adversity Porn? How about a real glimpse at the people risking infection in healthcare or low wage grocery jobs!

Say NO to the dress! 😅

The cratering industry!

Two different couples I know have had to postpone their weddings next month.

Every industry is hurting. Restaurants, bars, schools, entertainment, resorts, airlines, travel, hotels, you name it.

No one cares about ppl who 'can't get married'. It's a F'n pandemic

Meanwhile, Trump waited weeks to announce Corona Virus restrictions after first meeting with Republican Senate telling them to dump their stock as a reward for no conviction on Impeachment.

Put the money towards medical research then!

Spending $30k for a wedding then expecting workers to bail out your student loans. Time to use that money wisely, fulfill your obligations!

imtanjab

Delay.

Don’t worry. Half of you will get divorced anyway.
