Africa, which has a population of 1.3 billion, had registered around 1,100 cases of coronavirus spread across 43 countries and reported 39 deaths as of March 22, according to the World Health Organization.
African governments are ramping up public awareness campaigns, hoping the continent’s previous experience with outbreaks of diseases like Ebola will help. African hospitals are already overburdened with patients suffering from endemic diseases such as malaria and measles. Conflicts or internal unrest in countries like Burkina Faso, South Sudan, Nigeria and Ethiopia have displaced millions of people and destroyed infrastructure.
