How does the experience of being photographed as a model by someone else compare to photographing yourself? It’s interesting, because I used to think there was such a huge difference. But now as I progress in both I am realising that it’s all about how you perceive it. When I started self-portraits it was because I wanted to create something that was more intimate than a modelling photo, that made you truly feel something when you looked at it.
I started my self-portraits at a time when I was experiencing a lot of difficulty with myself and my gender construct, so in my early work you can see the definitive struggle and lost child inside each person. I have one series where I am sat a table and my mother sits beside me out of focus – that was a truly emotional thing for me to create and was made at a time when I felt I could relate to no one in my family or life. As I have progressed I have created people that are truly camp.
