Cigna President and CEO David Cordani and world champion swimmer Michael Phelps participated in a recent panel discussion on mental health and the latest research about loneliness.
The discussion took place during Cigna's recent annual Client Forum, a conference that brings together the company's largest employer client partners to discuss the changing healthcare landscape and explore innovations in whole-person health, in Palm Springs, California.Loneliness Index Phelps described experiencing depression and anxiety despite being one of the world's most accomplished athletes of all time.
When it comes to our workplaces, employers and colleagues play an important role in helping lonely workers feel more connected, which is ultimately better for employees and employers. He reminds people to support one another, especially at work, and to find those simple touchpoints — even if it's seeing someone that's in a bad spot or feeling down and simply saying hello, smiling, and reaching out to them. Phelps reiterated how he relied on his own network to get through his mental-health issues.
"Every employer is its own micro community, whether you know it or don't," he said. "And within that micro community, there are cultures, there are subcultures, there's peer pressure, there's peer support."
One group of people may be happier this way: the introverts. They love “social distancing”!
