NSTnation Police shot down claims of alleged inaction to enforce the Movement Control Order MCO at the Air Itam Market today.

A Facebook posting with pictures of large crowds went viral on social media criticising the enforcement unit's inaction to enforce it .

In a posting on"Muhsin Latheef’s" page, the owner said the situation at the market was still the same and asked if there were any double standards in enforcement. However northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong rejected the claim saying the enforcement unit was stationed there since 6am.

Based on checks, the enforcement team from both the police and Penang Island City Council were carrying out their duties as usual. Limited people were allowed in to control the crowd inside the market while the enforcement unit also makes periodic reminders using loud hailers to leave the area once purchasing has been made. The Air Itam Market has been marked as one of the hotspots with overcrowding issues despite the MCO.

Market goers were subjected to criticism as they were seen ignoring the MCO which could put hundreds of people there at risk of contracting Covid-19.
