Many Italian companies and academics are pressing the government to reopen factories to prevent an economic catastrophe, as the world watches how the first Western country to impose a lockdown can extricate itself from the unprecedented measures.

About 150 Italian academics have published a letter in Italian financial daily Il Sole-24 Ore, owned by the Italian business lobby Confindustria, urging the government to unblock the economy. The death toll has risen relentlessly and now stands at more than 16,500. The government extended the restrictions last week until April 13 and is widely expected to extend them again, for another three weeks.

“I expect government to set strict rules on security and then give us the possibility to go back to work,” said Stefano Ruaro, founder of Sertech Elettronica, a producer of electro-mechanical, electronic and software components in Vicenza. Trade unions have threatened to strike unless the government keeps non-core activities down. Protect health over wealth, they say - and while many companies are pushing the government for a plan to reopen factories, they won’t risk their staff.

Does Italy think tourists will be flocking to see the Coliseum? If they manufacture some goods, who will they get to move it to a final destination? Are they seriously going to try for Round 2 so they can claim 1 Most Cases spot?!?

Stupid to have not been testing the public they should emulate China, now Germany - who are doing a wonderful job to keep flattening the curve. Italy has done nothing, not even fumigation the virus is just sitting on surfaces waiting.

LOL, no. It's not an impossible dilemma. The country needs to back to work as quickly as possible

so let the healthy ones go back to work. even if they get it, it won't be that bad

Bob Iger on Disney After Coronavirus: Disney World and Other Parks Could Screen for IllnessesBob Iger on Disney parks after coronavirus: 'Just as we now do bag checks for everybody that goes into our parks, it could be that at some point we add a component of that that takes people’s temperatures.' It could be = we’ll do it for awhile to make people feel better then eventually phase it out. Ya take someone’s temperature that’s bouncing around from park to park walking miles a day in 100F temperatures. Sounds like a solid plan. I was in Epcot the last Sunday, they didn’t seem to concerned then. Genuine park have been closed
