Dublin fruit firm Keelings says just 40 locals applied for picking jobs

Fruit and veg producers Keelings have said that just 40 local people applied for fruit picking jobs, following a significant backlash for hiring a group of seasonal workers that were flown in from Bulgaria.

Responding to widespread criticism from politicians and members of the public, the company said: "Up until the late 1990s, we recruited most of our seasonal workers locally, but over the last 20 years there has been less interest from Irish people in this work. "Today we have received a further 13 applications so far. We hope to employ as many of these people as possible."

They also say staff will not be allowed to commence work for another two weeks and must restrict their movements in the meantime.

Ask yourself why? What are they paying and under which conditions? If they had teamed up with the govt to appeal for temp workers in this scenario they would have got it!
