This cannabis dispensary chain acquired Colorado’s first delivery license amid the coronavirus

order on March 26, which remains in place until April 26. As of April 2, cannabis dispensaries were deemed an essential service in all states where cannabis is legal for both medical and adult use . The exception is in Massachusetts, where only medical dispensaries are currently open — causing controversy as to why liquor stores were classified as essential, but recreational cannabis stores were not .

“We have been planning to get our delivery program off the ground really [since] the start of the year — moving forward with the process of applying for a delivery license, working to prepare vehicles and [developing] technology to allow people to place orders,” Native Roots Cannabis Co. and Garden Variety CEO Ryan Brown told me via a recent Zoom interview for the Forbes video team. “It was just a weird coincidence that we were issued the permit coinciding with the timeframe of Covid-19.

Since January 2, 2020, medical card-carrying patients 21 and older have been allowed to receive deliveries to their homes, however, local jurisdictions have been slow to enact the policy. The City of Boulder is the first jurisdiction in Colorado to allow retailers to deliver medical cannabis. The only other jurisdictions to have currently opted in is the neighboring suburbs of Superior and Louisville.

Fender also said Native Roots has been in talks with other local governments about adopting delivery. But so far there hasn’t been any movement for Native Roots’ additional 18 dispensaries throughout the state. As Coloradans continue to shelter in place, the Covid-19 pandemic could ultimately tip the scale for more cities to approve medical cannabis delivery — as of April 14,
