The Paycheck Protection Program was meant for small businesses, but some big, publicly traded companies have cashed in too, including sandwich chain Potbelly, video storage company Quantum and coal producer Hallador Energy, each of which got $10 million.

"Paycheck protection grants are supposed to support workers and their families during this economic crisis, not line the pockets of corporate executives," Herrig said.

Among the other companies that qualified for loans is Escalade Sports, which describes itself as"a leader in table tennis tables, residential in-ground basketball goals and in archery bows." The company, which has 468 employees and is headquartered in Evansville, Indiana, received a $5.6 million loan.

Legacy Housing, the country's fourth biggest manufactured homes company, received a $6.5 million loan, while pharmaceutical company Optinose got $4.4 million.Although restaurant and travel companies are among the hardest hit by the downturn, they haven't received the most money. The top borrowers were construction companies, followed by professional, scientific and technical services , and manufacturing .

The fact that construction companies got the most could be due to their deeper relationships with banks, which may have decided to prioritize them over other companies, KBW Research says.

Did these companies qualify. If yes then entitled to the loan and anger should be to the drafters. Oversight wouldn't matter if they legally qualify. Loan amount is 2.5 times payroll costs, caps salary at $100k and 75% of loan must be used for payroll regardless.

Ok I'm no economist but isn't the whole idea of a publicly traded company so that you can be publicly funded? Why don't they issue more stock in order to shore up more funds for their businesses? Their stock price may take a hit in the short run but at least they'll stay solvent.

They will all need that money because they're never getting another dime from me.

They better give it back for actual small businesses. They also better not hide behind 'but you didn't say we couldn't!'

BOYCOTT AND PROTEST the rich organizations that are stealing from the mom & pop shops of America. Pass it on! Shame

PrincessBravato Greed has no limit!

Sad but I'm sure that was the intent of Congress. They give money to the big companies so that the big companies can support their campaigns.

Easy enough to patronize companies that didn't cheat the system. There are going to be plenty of companies hungry for business.

The growth of a brand like Potbelly has been built upon gig workers and other non-traditional employees. It’s time for Washington to make sure the 55 million non-traditional employees aren’t left asking, “What about us?” The New Center explains:

Ah, Corporate greed never ceases to amaze me😡

Trump fired the IG in charge of oversight of this program so yeah.

Who needs an IG who would monitor how the funds are distributed? Grifters gonna grift

yes those big old chains took up 10% of the total. those bastards.

As a true small business owner, this is the stuff that makes me livid.

I'm sure Potbelly will give it back, right? Or are they happy to see smaller, privately-owned competition get pushed out of business?

The thing about “loans”......you have to pay it back, it’s a loan not a gift. If this was “bail-out” money, well then, outrage would be justifiable.

So It’s Not So Small Business Assistance🤬

They got big lawyers to get it for them

shocked

These are the places that have ripped off the small businessman! We need to not eat at RuthsChris & Potbelly & let them deal with the consequences!

well..tack on pottbelly to the list of places I won't eat at..honestly..didn't eat there that often to begin with.

exactly. well said. read more here, in my story:

But NOOOOOO, the Democrats were just stalling trying to write in protections against this sort of nonsense.

Greed!!!

The program is just an extension of Trump's pay to play philosophy. He sees public office as a mechanism to transfer taxpayer assets to his private account. Graphic from OpenSecrets
